Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
